City of Tigard Mayor Jim Griffith Passes Away November 28, 2003 Mayor Jim Griffith passed away Friday, November 28, at 3 p.m. from complications from an illness for which he was undergoing tests. Services will be held at the Tigard United Methodist Church, 9845 SW Walnut Place, Tigard, Oregon, (Telephone: 503-639-3181) on December 9, 1 p.m. Viewing is at Young's Funeral Home, 11831 SW Pacific Highway, Tigard, Oregon (Telephone: 503-639-1206), Thursday - Saturday, December 4, 5, and 6. Mayor Griffith was the founder and proprietor of Jim Griffith and Associates, Inc., a consulting business that processed land use and construction permits. He was in business for over 18 years. Career history includes service as a building official for the City of Portland for nine years and a hospital administrator for six years. An Oregon native, Mayor Griffith was a Tigard resident since 1992. Before his appointment and subsequent election as Mayor, he served on the Tigard Planning Commission (1994-2000); the Tigard Beyond Tomorrow Task Force; Transportation System Plan Task Force; Zoning Code Rewrite Task Force; State of Oregon Building Structures Board; Oregon Remodelers Association (Chair in 2000); Governmental Affairs Committee (Chair); and the City of Portland Mayoral Transition Committee for Mayor Vera Katz. Mayor Griffith was recently re-elected to the Oregon Mayor's Association Board of Directors. Mayor Griffith was appointed to the Council on September 12, 2000 and then elected as Mayor by Tigard voters in March 2001. He was reelected in November 2002 to serve a four-year term, January 2003 through December 2006. The Mayor loved people and found great joy working with teens. He gave countless hours to furthering youth activities in Tigard. He was a huge fan of the Tigard High School Tigers, loved gardening and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. The employees of the City of Tigard offer their sincere condolences to the Mayor's family and wish them strength in dealing with the challenges ahead. We will truly miss our mayor, Jim Griffith. |
