Questions and Answers

Question:
How do I find out about volunteering at the Library?

Answer:
The easiest thing to do is click here. You can also pick up information at the Library from the Library Information Board across from the glass display cases, at the Welcome Desk or on the second floor near the Reference Desk. Trish Stormont is the Library's Volunteer Coordinator. You can call her at 503-718-2516. This is a timely question since National Volunteer Recognition Week is in April!

Question:
How do I find out about volunteering at the Library?

Question:
Where can I get a street map of Tigard?
Answer: The Library has two kinds of street maps. Both the City of Tigard and the Tigard Chamber of Commerce have created them. Ask for them at the Reference Desk on the second floor. You can also get a Chamber map at the Chamber of Commerce building at 12345 SW Main Street or pick up a City map at the Permit Center in City Hall at 13125 SW Hall Blvd.

Question:
Why doesn't the library have more parking?
Answer: Last year the entrance to the library was modified according to the original design plans. The entrance is now aligned with the drive-up book drops, so that patrons do not have to drive through the parking lot to drop off library materials. The reconfiguration of the driveway also added 20 new parking spaces to the lot, as well as 10 new spaces on Wall Street.

Question:
Is there any way to find out what kind of comments people made about the library in its annual survey?
Answer: Yes. We received more than 1,500 responses to the question: How can we serve you better? Download the comments here.

Question:
Why don't you add at least one more self-checkout machine?
Answer: Good news! The Library now has a second self check-out machine, which means shorter lines, less waiting. It is located right next to the first machine. It is identical to the first machine, which was installed in September 2007. After the first machine was installed, use jumped from an average of 6,410 to 14,420 monthly check-outs.
Question:
How can we request new books?
Answer: Here are the best two ways to recommend specific books or materials for the library to purchase:

  • Fill out a green "Suggestion for Purchase" card available at the Library. They are located at the counter near the book drops on the first floor and near the Reference Desk on the second floor. If you can't find one, ask at any service desk. Return the card to the desk or to a comment box near the cards.

  • As the result of a patron suggestion, you may now also recommend items to purchase on-line. Just go to the Suggestion for Purchase page. Fill out the form and click on the green "Send Your Suggestion Now" button.
Question:
Why can't we check out the study rooms for more than two hours?
Answer: You can! We've changed the study room policy to allow people to use them for more than two hours if no one else requests them. The Library has three study rooms on the second floor. Each will accommodate up to six people. They are available for non-profit, educational and cultural groups or individuals who wish to study.

Rooms may be reserved up to one week in advance. They must be reserved at the main Reference Desk on the second floor. Reservations may be made in person or by telephone (503-718-2517). If the study rooms have not been reserved, they are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The study rooms are locked when not in use. Users must check in at the Reference Desk for access to a room. Proper identification, such as a library card, student ID or valid Oregon driver's license is required to use the rooms.

Question:
Can the coffee shop be open longer? I would use it every time I come in if it were open more regular hours.
Answer: The new vendor Sesame Donuts has expanded coffee shop hours and is open as early as 7 a.m. Monday - Saturday. In addition to beverages and pastries, Sesame Donuts also offers a variety of soups, salads and sandwiches. For complete hours and the menu, click here. Food is not allowed in the Library, but several chairs and tables are located in the bright lobby. Beverages are allowed in approved containers.

Question:
Can you move the self-checkout machine to a different location away from the Check-out Desk? Also, why don't you have more self-checkout machines?
Answer: The Library has a new self-checkout machine. It is located across from the check-out line near the counter with the Express Internet and library catalog terminals. It's more user-friendly and has more features. During October and November the library is running a special promotion to introduce library users to the new machine. Staff will be available to assist you in learning how to use the machine. They can also prepare DVDs for checkout and retrieve holds. If you try out the new self-check out machine during the promotion, you can sign up for a drawing for a 3-M gift pack.

Before getting a second self-checkout machine, we need to show that the existing machine is being used enough to warrant another one. The more library patrons use the new self-checkout machine, the more likely we will purchase a second machine.

Question:
Can you have more children's programs on weekends? Many of us who work cannot participate in the weekday early morning programs for children.
Answer: Beginning Saturday, October 13, the Tigard Library will present Saturday Adventures on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. Elementary school-age kids are invited to enjoy special guests, art activities, games, stories and more. This fall, kids can look forward to a fall harvest party, fall crafts and performing pigs, to name a few. For more information on these programs, click here.

Question:
Could you please get more Large Print Books?
Answer: Yes! The Library's budget for Large Print books was increased 25 percent in this year's budget, so patrons will have a greater variety to choose from. The Library's Large Print collection is located on the second floor outside the Houghton Room. It includes Fiction, Non-Fiction, Biographies and some periodicals including The New York Times.

Question:
Why don’t you post a visible sign in the lobby about the non-use of those cell phones?
Answer: We have posted two large “No Cell Phone” posters—one on each floor. The one on the first floor is located in the entryway right before the entrance to the actual library. Several 8 ˝” x 11” signs are also posted throughout the internet computer sections on the second floor.

The library’s cell phone policy allows them to be used only in the Main Lobby, the meeting rooms or the study rooms. Staff are instructed to ask people to turn them off or to move to one of the approved cell phone use areas.
