May We Recommend & Sons: A Novel, by David Gilbert
David Gilbert's & Sons is an intelligently written, cleverly plotted and occasionally moving story about the children of a legendary fiction author, A.N. Dyer, whose book Ampersand is nearly as famous as The Catcher in the Rye. The story is narrated by the middle-aged Philip Topping, a friend of the family who has a thorny connection with the older sons. When they were younger, the Dyer boys, Richard and Jamie, played a humiliating practical joke on Philip. That cruelty seems to run in the family. A. N. Dyer did something even worse to Philip's father when the two were students at an exclusive private school. The details of this critical event slowly emerge as the narrative loops back and forth between events recounted in A. N. Dyer's novel and their real-life origins. Gilbert's setting and descriptions of the wealthy, Upper-East Side of Manhattan are reminiscent of classic Tom Wolfe. & Sons has received little attention, but expect more in the future from this powerful new writer.
