May We Recommend Race to the Top of the World: Richard Byrd and the First Flight to the North Pole, by Sheldon Bart
This fast-paced book is a wonderful example of historical adventure writing. It describes the 1926 Byrd-Amundsen race to be the first to fly over the North Pole. Bart introduces a cast of large-than-life characters, drawing readers into the world of early aviation and the perils of polar exploration. Although Byrd's claim to be the first to cross the pole is shrouded in controversy, Bart makes a strong case that Byrd was well equipped with the best aeronautical navigational gear and was passionate about his quest. Aviation buffs will appreciate the wealth of technical detail. A great story for all readers.
