Downtown Tigard is a great place to walk. A new walking map and informational signs will make it
even easier and more enjoyable.
Walking Survey Results are in
Thank you to everyone who took part in our recent downtown walking survey. We appreciate
you sharing your downtown walking experiences with us. Your feedback is
helping to shape the creation of a downtown walking map and wayfinding signage system, a project funded
through a grant from Metro's Regional Transportation Options program. Downtown walking
maps will be available summer 2012.
One improvement you asked for is signs on the Fanno Creek Trail. We are excited
that Metro has selected the trail in downtown Tigard as the demonstration site for signs
that are being developed as part of The Intertwine—a regional network of public
agencies, private businesses, and nonprofit organizations working to develop and
maintain the region's trails and outdoors areas. You can expect to see the
demonstration signs on the Fanno Creek Trail in March and can provide feedback.
Your input will help guide the design of permanent signs along the trail and downtown
locations. The City will be installing the permanent signs this summer.
Your responses are helping to shape the creation of a downtown walking map, as well
as wayfinding signs on downtown streets and the Fanno Creek Trail. The map and signs are
expected to be finalized in spring 2012.
About the project
The City has received a grant from Metro's
Regional Transportation Options program to develop
and implement a downtown walking map and wayfinding signage system. The
project's objectives are to:
- Promote walking safety, convenience and general appeal;
- Promote more efficient use of parking (park once);
- Support the vitality of downtown businesses and services;
- Promote stronger connections among downtown businesses, services, civic buildings, and residential neighborhoods.
The Wayfinding Signage will include three general types of signs:
- Standard directional signage at key intersections/decision points;
- Fanno Creek Trail signage within Downtown;
- An informational kiosk, located either at the Transit Center or another central location within Downtown.
The Walking Map will include two elements in one final product:
- A broadly defined downtown map (approximately ½ mile radius from Transit Center) corresponding
to the Wayfinding system area;
- A larger scale Main Street inset map showing Main Street businesses.
The Map/Wayfinding system area will be generally centered on the Tigard Transit Center and will
encompass a roughly half-mile radius from the center. It will include key origins and destinations
such as the Transit Center, Tigard Public Library, and Tigard Senior Center.
Wayfinding signs are expected to be installed on downtown streets and Fanno Creek Trail later in 2012.
The walking map is scheduled to be available in summer 2012.
