Success of Pacific Highway Intersection Improvements
Tigard's two biggest road construction projects are complete. Newly constructed turn lanes from intersecting
streets were open to motorists in late 2010. In January, 2011 a third through-lane on Pacific Highway followed suit.
Preliminary traffic data indicates the intersection improvements have paid off. Traffic back-ups have been dramatically
reduced, with most vehicles moving through each of the revamped intersections in one signal cycle. The improvements have
reduced travel times on Pacific Highway southbound from I-5 to Greenburg Road by about 20 percent. Northbound travel time
between Walnut Street and Highway 217 has been reduced by about 30 percent in the evening rush hour and by
about 60 percent midday.
Project Details:
- A third through-lane on Pacific Highway through both intersections to move traffic.
- Additional turn lanes on the side streets for more efficient intersection operation.
- Better roadway geometry for improved safety.
- Extending the existing median island on Pacific Highway from Hall Boulevard to Highway 217.
- Wider sidewalks, new bike lanes, improved pedestrian crossings, as well as updated bus stops and shelters.
- Corners with a larger turning radius to improve the flow of truck traffic.
- Landscaping to improve the aesthetics of this central area of our community
which includes adding four to five trees for every tree we have to remove during construction.
