As concept designs were developed for streets, gateways, and public spaces in the Downtown Streetscape Plan, it became evident that the heart of Downtown could be a "green heart." The compelling ideas of green connections, pedestrian-oriented streets, natural resources, and sustainability are part of a series of linked projects planned for Downtown.

Plans to reconstruct Main Street as a green street marks a major commitment to sustainability by the City of Tigard. Constructing green streets is also an important opportunity to reinforce themes from the Tigard Downtown Improvement Plan (TDIP), such as "green heart" and "green connections."
