COFFEE TALK UPDATE (8/27/10):
Aaron Jones, Kodiak Pacific Construction, provided the two-week schedule today at the Coffee Meeting. There is still a lot of concrete work to be done. Next week crews will be preparing driveways and sidewalks for concrete. The following week the concrete crews will pour the driveways and sidewalks, mainly between Ash Avenue and Main Street on the north side of Burnham Street. Fox Irrigation crews are finishing up the installation of the irrigation lines along Burnham Street that will be for the public planter areas. The water quality swales are a work in progress: the big pits are being lined with black plastic to keep stormwater from migrating under the street and sidewalk, perforated pipes go in next and then drain rock goes on top of the pipe. More material will go in later, before planting begins. The stone masons have the entry walls ready for stone.
Next week they will be constructing the large entry sign at Hall and Burnham.
Thanks to the TCBDA for hosting these meetings!

What makes a "Green Street" green?
Improvements to Burnham Street include 10—18 foot sidewalks, on-street parking, and a
"Green Street" streetscape, which includes the use of Low
impact Development Applications
in the streetscape to treat stormwater runoff. Landscaped
"Stormwater Planters," located
within the sidewalk, provide a visual amenity, as well as an effective way to remove oils,
dirt, and other pollutants before discharging stormwater to neighboring creeks.
Stormwater runoff will flow to one of several stormwater planters for treatment. Planters
are placed in series so that stormwater will enter a planter and either drain through
the soil layers to be treated or flow through the planter and into the next one for treatment.
These soil layers are designed to remove pollutants and also provide a healthy
growing media for plants and trees, qualifying these planters as "Green Street"
technology. The planters represent the latest in
green infrastructure that protects
water resources and promotes sustainable design.
The design of the planters was a collaborative effort between engineers Kevin Timmins
and Ashley Cantlon and landscape architect, David Haynes, of the Lake Oswego firm Otak, Inc.

Ash Avenue Dog Park Closure
The NEW Burnham Street is under construction and dogs are being "scent" to
other dog parks starting November 1, 2009. At the completion of the project,
the community will have a New Burnham Street and an
improved Ash Avenue Dog Park.
During construction, please visit one of Tigard's other dog parks:
Summerlake Dog Park - Located in northwest Tigard, south of Scholls Ferry Road
and east of 135th Avenue (11450 SW Winterlake Drive). Summerlake is open daily
dawn to dusk.
Potso Dog Park -
Located on Wall Street off Hunziker Street. Potso is open weekday evenings from
4 p.m. until dusk and on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from dawn until dusk.
Burnham Street Project
Construction of the long-awaited Burnham Street improvements has begun!
For years, planning has been underway to rebuild this key route connecting
residents with the Downtown between Hall Boulevard and Main Street.
Over the past two years, the city has been acquiring the necessary right-of-way,
pooling the required funds and gathering public input. The Burnham Street project
will be funded from state gasoline tax, transportation impact fees, and some
urban renewal funds.
Project Schedule
Construction is underway! Access to area businesses will be maintained throughout
construction. The City of Tigard will notify area businesses and
property owners in advance about lane closures, detours and other
temporary disruptions.
Project Design
This will be Tigard’s first “Green Streets” project. One of the “green”
amenities is the use of stormwater treatment planters. Plans call for
widening and reconstructing the roadway and adding on-street parking.
Pedestrian-friendly features include sidewalks, benches, new street
lights, street trees and landscaped gateways.
The Burnham Street project will also:
- Spur future development in the Downtown;
- Connect Ash Avenue to the Commuter Rail Park & Ride;
- Improve a segment of Ash Avenue that adjoins Burnham;
- Improve access to the Fanno Creek Park and trail system;
- Open new development sites for jobs, housing and other new uses.

The City of Tigard and Kodiak Pacific Construction are committed to sustainable design and
construction practices. Here are a few examples from the New Burnham
Street project.
