Tree City USA
Tigard Has Been Named Tree City USA for the 10th Consecutive Year
and Received Its Third Growth Award
March, 2011
Tigard has been named a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation to honor its
commitment to its community forest. This is the tenth year Tigard has received this national recognition.
Tigard has met the four standards to become a Tree City USA: a tree board or department; a tree care ordinance; a comprehensive community forestry program; and an Arbor Day observance.
In addition, Tigard is again the recipient of a Tree City USA Growth Award for
demonstrating progress in it is community forestry program. Efforts in 2010 such as
incorporating street tree planting in all of the City's Capital Improvement Projects,
sending postcards to all new City residents on a quarterly basis with information about
tree programs in Tigard, and holding community-wide tree events helped make the
City eligible for the Growth Award.
The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.
"Trees in our cities and towns help clean the air, conserve soil and water, moderate temperature and bring nature into our daily lives," said John Rosenow, Chief Executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. "Tree City USA designation recognizes the work of elected officials, staff and citizens who plant and care for the community forest. Trees are a vital component of the infrastructure in our cities and towns, and provide environmental and economical benefits. A community, and its citizens, that recognize these benefits and provide needed care for its trees deserves recognition and thanks."
