Arbor Day

Mayor Dirksen Receives Tree City USA Recognition Arbor Day
How will you celebrate Arbor Day?

Nationally, Arbor Day is celebrated the last Friday of April, but did you know that the State of Oregon declares an entire week, not just one day, as Arbor Week? In Oregon, the first week of April is dedicated to celebrating trees.

In the City of Tigard, on March 23, 2010 Mayor Dirksen will take it a step further and proclaim the entire month of April to be Arbor Month. The Mayor will be observing this special time by planting trees at Mary Woodward Elementary on April 8, 2010 with the second grade class.

What will you do to celebrate? The following is a list of ways you and your family may want to join the City of Tigard in celebrating Arbor Day all year long:
  • Volunteer Get involved in the process of updating Tigard’s tree ordinances and standards to better protect and enhance the urban forest. Contact John Floyd at 503-715-2429 or johnfl@tigard-or.gov to receive updates about relevant meetings and events.

  • Tigard Tree Board Learn more about what this board is doing by attending a meeting. To find out more about current Tree Board programs, meeting times and locations, contact City Arborist Todd Prager at 503-718-2700 or todd@tigard-or.gov.

  • Surf the Web - View this web site for information about Tigard's tree programs and policies.

  • Visit the Library - Tigard Public Library has loads of books about trees.

  • Evaluate Your Landscape - Determine if you have trees that are in need of maintenance, or if there are any tree planting opportunities. Contact the Pacific Northwest Chapter of Arboriculture at www.pnwisa.org or 503-874-8263 for a referral to a professional certified arborist who can assist you.
