Arbor Day

Arbor Day 2011
How will you celebrate Arbor Day?

Arbor Day is celebrated nationwide on the last Friday of April. Did you know that the State of Oregon declares an entire week, not just one day, as Arbor Week? In Oregon, the first week of April is dedicated to celebrating trees. On March 22, 2011 Mayor Dirksen proclaimed the entire month of April to be Arbor Month here in Tigard. The Mayor will observe this special time by planting trees at Metzger Elementary on April 22.

Attend an Arbor Day Event:
  • Urban Forestry Code Revisions Citizen Advisory Committee Meeting
    Wednesday, April 13 | 6:00 p.m. | Tigard Public Library Community Room

The Committee will discuss urban forestry standards for development, tree grove preservation incentives, and tree permit requirements. The public is invited to attend, and time is reserved for public comment at the beginning of the meeting.

  • SOLV-IT Ivy Pull
    Saturday, April 16 | 9 a.m.-1 p.m. | Mary Woodward Elementary - 12325 SW Katherine Street

Meet in the parking lot at the elementary school. For more information contact Carla Staedter at 503-718-2788 or carla@tigard-or.gov.

What will you do to celebrate? The following is a list of ways you and your family may want to join the City of Tigard in celebrating Arbor Day all year long:
  • TAKE A WALK DOWNTOWN
Street improvements on Burnham Street include 12-18 foot sidewalks, on-street parking, and "green street" features, which includes the use of flow-through "stormwater planters" in the streetscape to treat stormwater runoff.

  • ATTEND A TREE BOARD MEETING
Learn more about what this board is doing by attending a meeting. To find out more about current Tree Board programs, meeting times and locations, contact City Arborist Todd Prager at 503-718-2700 or todd@tigard-or.gov.

  • VISIT THE LIBRARY
Tigard Public Library has loads of books about trees, including a special Arbor Day booklist available all month long.

  • EXPLORE A PARK
Visit a City of Tigard Park. Ride your bike through Woodard Park or walk down to the Tualatin River at Cook Park to check out trees in Tigard. Visit www.tigard-or.gov/parks for more information about city parks.

  • NOMINATE A HERITAGE TREE
Developed by the Tree Board, the city's Heritage Tree Program seeks to protect rare or exceptional trees, or stands of trees, in Tigard. Once approved for designation, property owners receive a plaque and permanent financial and technical assistance with tree maintenance and preservation. Visit www.tigard-or.gov/trees or contact City Arborist Todd Prager at 503-718-2700 or todd@tigard-or.gov for more information.

  • EVALUATE YOUR LANDSCAPE
Determine if you have trees that are in need of maintenance or if there are any tree planting opportunities. Contact the Pacific Northwest Chapter of Arboriculture at www.pnwisa.org or 503-874-8263 for a referral to a professional certified arborist who can assist you.

  • GET INVOLVED
Get involved in the process of updating Tigard's tree ordinances and standards to better protect and enhance the urban forest. Contact Todd Prager at 503-718-2700 or todd@tigard-or.gov to receive updates about relevant meetings and events.
