The students of Fowler Middle School are to be congratulated for all their work which resulted in the new milepost in the traffic island at the corner on Walnut and Tiedeman Streets. According to students, the traffic island looked like a good place for a milepost, so they came up with the idea to show direction and distance to 11 sites - 5 in Tigard and 6 others around the world. The students raised enough money for the pole and the falcon weathervane on top of the pole. Why a falcon? That's the Fowler Middle School mascot. In addition, they presented their plan to the Tigard City Council, the Tigard-Tualatin School Board and Art Resources of Tigard. During the months of planning, the students worked closely with the City of Tigard engineering staff to insure that the milepost complied with City codes. Generous community donors contributed the cost of the signs to help the students' vision become a reality. The donors included the Tigard Area Historical & Preservation Association; Charles Kingston, the past Principal at Fowler; Pat Keerins, whose family put up the "old windmill", the Tigard Breakfast Rotary Club; Washington Square Mall; Margaret Barnes; Marissa, Zoe and Bill Monahan; Jim Hendryx; and Craig Prosser. Many thanks to all who contributed to this project and hats off to the Fowler Middle School students! |
