Neighborhood Network Contest Winners

And the winners are…
Thank you to all the residents who logged onto their neighborhood area web page to share comments and photos of what they like best about their neighborhood. The responses were fun, engaging and inspirational.

The comments and photos were so great, that we plan to share them in a Neighborhood Network calendar! Watch this space for an opportunity to share your images in the 2011 calendar that illustrates why Tigard - and YOUR neighborhood - is A Place to Call Home.

Area 2: Cathy Fergusson

I love my neighborhood. I've lived at this location for 12 1/2 years. I live in a cul-de-sac where there's obviously little traffic, with wonderful, caring neighbors, one of which is the original cabinet contractor for my home. This has come in handy for fixing sliding doors that have proved impossible. As neighbors, we all enjoy a brief conversation from time to time over retrieving mail or in passing. I also love that the greenway trail system is so close, along with Summerlake as I walk my dog daily. All beautiful landscaping that is so close to home yet is reminisce of wilderness. There used to be an owl residing along the trails, and recently, an elusive animal that might be a beaver has made a dam just minutes from my house. I also enjoy the proximity to civilization such as Washington Square and other local markets, Tigard public library, and a quick hop onto 217 when necessary. If you desire a quiet place to live, close to nature's beauty, yet accessible to local schools, markets, churches with great neighbors, area 2 takes the prize.

Area 7: Dominique Gay

Our neighborhood is the best in Tigard! We have schools close by, lots of trees, places to walk and ride your bike and people that are awesome and say hello when you pass by.

Area 8: Mary Kerns

My feet were dragging when we moved to Summerfield six year ago! Husband Jerry was tired of taking care of 7 acres and wanted to be "in town". Oh, I hate to admit it but he was so right! It didn't take all that long for me to fall in love with our neighbors, the convenient locations to everything from groceries, doctors and all fun activities available.

As I look back and assess how I feel now, I am very grateful to be where I am. The Summerfield area in the Southview neighborhood is especially beautiful, we think! The residents are so active and look forward to including you in those activities. We had the choice of living in a house, an apartment or a townhouse. So I was able to garden because I like it!

The multitude of dog walkers and people walkers going by our home cover miles and miles on the streets. And the atmosphere feels and, statistics say, is very safe. Our neighbors keep an eye out for our house and watch when someone they don't know goes by. People say hi all the time!

Yes, our residents are over 55 but we enjoy seeing the high school kids walking through the neighborhood. And the high school golf team practices on our course. Those young people are great golfers! I can hear the beautiful sounds of the elementary school playground kids on many days. I can swim, play tennis, or golf or go to the library, play cards or just veg out at home. And we can walk over to Tigard High in the summer to see Broadway Rose musicals! Or to see athletic events during the school year!

A momma mallard hatched 9 babies in our backyard last week and we had to open our back gate so she and babies could walk across the street, cross the road and get to the pond! I love to hear the geese calling overhead. And the brilliant color of our main drive in the Fall is astounding!

I love it, love it, love it. And would like to share the good things with others who live here and away. I know many people feel the same way about their own neighborhoods and just think that we are all so fortunate to live in Tigard where all these good things are valued.

Area 8: Sharon Wilcox

My husband and I live in Summerfield - which is only about a block from Tigard High School. Although we have lived in the southwest Portland area for almost all of our lives, we decided on downsizing to this golf course community because good friends showed us around and even found a house for us that met our needs! We couldn't be happier, and feel we've found a very special part of Tigard. Besides being convenient to everything the city of Tigard has to offer, we can golf and play tennis, go Social Dancing here monthly and join in any number of art and craft groups. If we want, we can join in any of our Bingo, Poker, MahJongg, Canasta, Bridge and Pinochle groups. Did I mention Dance lessons, Line Dancing, Yoga, Seniorcise or Tai Chi? There are wonderful Garden, Travel and Book Clubs here, and if all this isn't enough, we also have exercise rooms and the swimming pool in the summer. My husband and I have always volunteered in county and community organizations, and have happily found a myriad of opportunities to do that here, as well. Enough! It's too easy to go on and on about "this place we call home."

Area 8! Our Area 8 neighborhood is so spectacular especially because the Summerfield Retirement community is within the area! We have some of the most lovely gardens anywhere...both front and backyards, wonderful professional plantings at entrances, great, friendly people, and....best of all... DUCKS and their babies!! They are so cute. Nature in Summerfield is just amazing...and, it's really nice living and playing here; golfing, swimming, doing art projects and playing all kinds of cards and bingo and mahjong. Nothin' but fun in the sun...and rain.

Area 8: Kathy Stark

Area 8! What excites me about the neighborhood I live in, is the diversity it offers. The sights and sounds in area eight are electrifying to say the least!

For starters, in area eight, we have Tigard High School. The sound of the high school marching band practicing outside carries clear down to Highland Court in Summerfield where I live. This is a wonderful sound when I am outside working in my garden.

And yet another great sound is that of the train that blows its wished on Durham Road just past the high school. I often hear the horn blowing when I am just about to fall sleep. What a wonderful sound it makes outside in the distance.

Here in Summerfield just off of Durham Road, a great sight is watching our residents walk their dogs on leashes outside. What a wonderful sight seeing both people and their dogs out for a stroll. Another sight is that of the fowl that frequent the ponds here on the 9th hole on the Summerfield Golf Course. Ducks and Geese gather every day and entertain us with their honks and quacks as they make their way along the shores.

It's a wonderful added pleasure to know that great shopping and award winning restaurants are just a few walking steps away. The Albertson's Shopping Center on the corner of Durham and Pacific Highway is a leisurely walk and offers a variety of shops, restaurants and even an ice cream parlor where people gather on warm summer evenings.

In summary, Area Eight offers all the amenities of big city living but with the softer feel and sensual atmosphere of small time life. No matter how big Tigard grows in population, area eight remains a vital corner of small town living with big town amenities.

I love it here and you will, too! (see the picture of the view from my back yard)

Area 6: Lindsay Lidington

What I like best about our neighborhood is being able to walk (especially on warm summer nights) to Max's Brew Pub with my family for supper.

Area 6: Krystal Vester

I love my neighborhood. Its so nice to be within walking distance of the Tigard Library and the Fanno Park Trails.

Area 6: Ginny Caullay

I live in Area 6 - I love living here, because the neighbors really care.

I hurt my back a year ago, and my neighbor across the street still mows my front lawn for me. He's so nice! I got scammed from a tree guy. He trimmed 3 out of 5 trees that I wanted done, and then never hauled the branches away. My neighbor helped me (slowly) brake down the branches and put them in his and my yard debris. He would not take anything for his work, saying I already paid to have it done, why pay twice. NEIGHBORS are wonderful!

Area 1: Eileen Kerry Kovac

No matter where I have lived, a beautiful environment and a wealth of wildlife have been a major component of a happy home. I moved to Oregon from Colorado in 1990, happy to see that I had chosen another state that cherished its wildlife. But I had never lived so close to Oregon's amazing variety of wildlife until moving to Tigard two years ago. My apartment complex backs up to Summer Creek, which is fed by Fanno Creek and leads into the inviting, multi-use SummerLake Park.

From my first day on the wetlands strip, I have observed a plethora of wildlife, and outstanding wetlands management by the City of Tigard. This amazing natural site is home to eagles, hawks, great blue heron, great white egret, ducks, beavers, nutria and even, on occasion, coyotes. (And too many other species to mention.) I can almost touch the wings of some local residents as they fly by my balcony, and the ever-changing landscape at every seasonal turn amazes with its beauty.

Not too long ago, I called the City of Tigard concerning what I perceived as a developing problem: beavers had destroyed a large number of white oak trees that provided a canopy for myriad smaller bird species. The City's quick response was gratifying; before long it had brought in a team of AmericaCorps volunteers who constructed wire cages around some but not all of other vulnerable trees, assuring a continued thriving co-existence among furry and feathered wildlife.

Every day I enjoy the beauty that my large windows bring indoors, and often walk along the creek to photograph the interesting residents. This is an environment to treasure, and it enhances my home and that of others in this area. Thanks, Tigard!

Area 2: Rochelle Villenave

This is our neighborhood, our home. One of the things we like the most and a big reason we choose this area is great trail running through Englewood Park. This is my daughter getting a bike riding lesson last summer. Not looking too happy here but walk the trails frequently in any season, a great asset for family fun and fitness.

Area 11: Donna & Randy Witten...and Sweetie too!

I want to enter this into my favorite neighborhood contest - I'm in area 11!

I love my neighborhood! I love Jack Park! It is only two block from my house & my owners take me there everyday! I get to chase squirrel, play on the play ground equipment & drink out of the near by creek! It is a wonderful life!

Area 10: Krager Family & Ally the cat

What I like about my neighborhood is that spring is here and the apple blossoms are out.
