Volunteers
In Tigard there is no "typical" volunteer or "typical" volunteer job. Individuals,
family members and neighbors, employee groups, alumni associations and scout troops
volunteer. Their ages span seven decades. They perform a range of unusual tasks for
which the city is very thankful.
For example, volunteers operate TV cameras to bring City Council meetings to the
community, serve on committees, facilitate community meetings, and take police vehicles
through DEQ. An individual may contribute a few hours at a one-day event in the parks
or several hundred hours in the Police Department as a reserve officer. All City of Tigard
departments benefit from the help of volunteers. In the library, volunteers shelve books,
repair damaged books, repair videotapes and teach computer classes, to name a few of their
activities.
With 970 volunteers contributing 21,621 total hours of volunteer work in 2005, Tigard is
lucky to have such generous and involved citizens. This incredible volunteer base shows how much
Tigard citizens care about their city! It is this spirit of generosity and involvement
that truly makes Tigard a place to call home.
