Partners for a Lead - Free Community

Mom and Son The City of Tigard purchases the majority of its water from the City of Portland and participates in a regional monitoring program for lead and copper with other Portland wholesale water customers. Tigard is responsible for collecting water samples representative of our sources, distribution system and individual homes. Tigard is very pleased to announce that lead is NOT detected in our water sources. However, it is important to remember that lead and copper can enter the drinking water supply through corrosion within the water distribution system or in household plumbing systems.

In an effort to address the presence of lead and copper in private homes and businesses, the City of Tigard is participating with water agencies throughout the Portland Metropolitan Area, in providing an outreach program supporting lead-free environments.

Kids drinking water Lead is particularly harmful to children and pregnant women. It can cause lowered IQ in children and other serious health and behavior problems. In the Portland Metropolitan area, one percent of the children tested for lead had levels of concern detected in their blood. Many children have not been tested for lead levels in their blood, yet they are exposed daily to dust and other sources of lead.

The regional outreach program, LeadLine, provides a variety of informational materials on how to reduce children’s exposure to lead. The LeadLine is an information and referral line (503-988-4000) that provides information regarding:
