Update: Portland City Council September 12 Meeting
On September 12, 2012, the Portland City Council voted in favor of fluoridating Portland's drinking water.
What does this mean for customers within the Tigard Water Service Area? Tigard receives the majority
of its water from the City of Portland. Any chemicals added to Portland's drinking water will be
passed on to Tigard's water customers.
It will likely take two to four years before Portland's fluoridation facilities are constructed and
are operational. If this occurs before 2016, there is a possibility Tigard customers would receive
fluoridated water for a limited time. Once the Lake Oswego-Tigard joint water supply project comes
online in 2016, Tigard will obtain its water from the Lake Oswego-Tigard Water Partnership.
There are no plans to fluoridate the water produced by the partnership.
Is Fluoridated Water in Tigard's Future?
Posted August 23, 2012
Portland Water Bureau (PWB) Commissioner Randy Leonard recently proposed adding fluoride to Portland's drinking water. The Portland City Council will hold a public hearing on water fluoridation on September 6, 2012. There have been reports that the council might take formal action on the matter as early as September 12, 2012.
What does this mean for customers within the Tigard Water Service Area? Tigard receives the majority of its water from the City of Portland. Any chemicals added to Portland's drinking water will be passed on to Tigard's water customers.
Should the Portland council approve the use of fluoride, it will take several years before fluoridation facilities are
constructed, probably sometime in 2015. Under this scenario, there is a possibility Tigard customers would
receive fluoridated water for a year or so before the Lake Oswego-Tigard joint water supply project comes
online in 2016. Once this project is operational, Tigard will obtain its water from the Lake Oswego-Tigard Water Partnership.
A Portland press release is attached.
