2006 Water Conservation Calendar

CONSERVE WATER FOR LIFE

Calendar Cover - Conserve Water for Life Known for its abundant rainfall it can be difficult for those living in the Pacific Northwest to remember the importance of conserving water. With an ever growing population and increase in water costs it is important for everyone to use water wisely. Being conscientious about water use and choosing to “conserve water for life” is a great way to do just that.

Committed to the protection and conservation of natural resources, the City of Tigard has participated in a number of outreach and education programs in an effort to communicate the message of water conservation. Conscious of the increased demand on resources due to a growing global population, Tigard has taken the initiative to share the conservation message with local, regional and global audiences. A few years ago, through the International City/County Managers Association and US Agency for International Development, the City of Tigard took the opportunity to participate in an international exchange program with two cities in Indonesia – Samarinda and Balikpapan. Over the past few years, the City of Tigard has shared its expertise in the area of water distribution and environmental education with their counterparts in Indonesia. The partnership has provided Tigard with the opportunity to share the water conservation message worldwide.

In August of 2005, Durham Elementary School teacher, Ms. Marilee Davies, traveled to Indonesia to present environmental-related lessons to local educators which were well received by administrators, teachers and students alike. After Ms. Davies’ lesson, students in Mr. Salgiman’s 6th grade class at Public School 003 – Balikpapan were asked to illustrate what they had learned about the water cycle in a picture. The pictures were wonderful representations of the lesson learned and the City of Tigard is privileged to have the opportunity to share a few of those pictures in this year’s Conservation Calendar!

Tigard would like to thank the students and teachers who participated in making this project a success and for continuing to share the message of conservation. The City’s commitment to providing customers with a clean, safe and dependable supply of drinking water is made a little easier thanks to the community’s conscious effort to use water wisely.
