Reduce

Waste Prevention Means Consuming and Throwing Away Less.
It includes:
  • Purchasing durable, long-lasting goods.
  • Seeking products and packaging that are as free of toxins as possible.
  • Supporting those products that use less raw materials in production, have a longer life, or that can be used again after its original use.
Source reduction actually prevents the generation of waste in the first place, so it is the MOST PREFERRED METHOD of waste management and goes a long way toward protecting the environment.

Looking to Reduce Your Impact on the Earth?
Examples of Reduction:
  • Reduce the amount of junk mail you receive
  • Plan meals to avoid waste
  • Bring your own shopping bag to the store
  • Buy at the local Farmers' Market
  • Buy, maintain and repair durable products
  • Use rechargeable batteries
  • Borrow, rent or share items such as books, videos, power tools or gardening equipment
  • Use reusable plates and silverware instead of paper or plastic
  • Buy only what you need
  • Give gifts that are resource efficient or that are an experience rather than a "thing"
