Speed Limits in School Zones
Speed laws for school zones in Oregon were revised during the 2005 legislative session,
effective July 1, 2006. The current law, adopted in 2003, will remain in effect until that
date.
As they approach schools, drivers should look carefully for signs advising them
of the maximum speeds that apply to that particular school zone.
Here is a brief summary of the present law (in effect until July 1, 2006):
- A "school zone" is defined as either: 1) the area adjacent to a school and marked
by "school zone" signs; or 2) a crosswalk marked by "school zone" signs.
- If the speed limit leading up to the school zone is 30 mph or less, the speed
limit in the school zone is 20 mph at all times.
- If the speed limit leading up to the school zone is 35 mph or more, the speed
limit will be 20 mph during posted school hours OR when lights are flashing on the
school-zone sign.
- For crosswalks not adjacent to school grounds, the speed limit is 20 mph
during posted hours, when lights are flashing or "when children are present."
- "When children are present" at a crosswalk means: when children are in a
crosswalk, waiting at a crosswalk or when a crossing guard is present.
- Fines are doubled for school zone and work zone speeding violations.
