SALARY:   $4,242-$5,286 per month, plus benefits. The City offers incentive pay for bilingual skills in Spanish as well as incentive pay for education.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  

This is a professional sworn position performing law enforcement and crime prevention work enforcing federal state and local laws, regulations and ordinances and performing related work as required. Duties of a Tigard Police Officer include, but are not limited to:
  • Patrols roads, highways, businesses, and residential areas of the City. Enforces applicable traffic and criminal laws. Makes arrests, issues traffic citations and warnings. Prepares case records and reports. Participates in the prosecution of cases in court.
  • Responds to a variety of calls including theft, juvenile complaints, family disputes and traffic accidents. Performs and assists with investigations, makes arrests and issues citations.
  • Serves warrants, court orders, and subpoenas.
  • Assists disabled motorists. Provides information and direction to the public. Observes and reports road conditions, hazards, potential crime, and traffic problems.
  • Accomplishes the Police Department Mission to create the highest level of livability possible by working with our citizens to preserve and protect life, liberty and property.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

Applicants must be 21 years old and possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Oregon Drivers License. No felony or domestic violence related misdemeanor convictions. Applicants must have: ability to learn and apply laws, statutes, regulations, ordinances and procedures; ability to give credible testimony in a court of law; ability to operate a motor vehicle and assigned equipment skillfully, safely and in conformance with applicable laws and department policies; ability to prepare accurate, concise, informative and grammatically correct reports; ability to understand and act upon complex oral and written instructions; ability to deal courteously and firmly with the public, other agencies and all levels of City staff.


EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:  

Graduation from high school or GED. Previous experience in law enforcement and/or college level law enforcement coursework is desirable but not required.


TESTING/HIRING PROCESS:  

All candidates must complete a City of Tigard Employment Application form and must take a written test. Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications and Education and Training requirements are eligible to take the written test (Date to be determined). Based on the results of the written test, candidates may be invited to participate in the following:

  • Pre-background Check
  • Physical Agility test (ORPAT)
  • Keyboarding test
  • Oral Board
  • Background Investigation - Additional documents required. Candidates' history must include an extraordinary level of integrity and honesty
  • Final interview with the Police Chief
  • Psychological Test
  • Physical Exam and Drug Screen
