Night Paving Continues
As part of our Pavement Management Program, a contractor will be
repaving Durham Road from Upper Boones Ferry Rd to 72nd Avenue Monday
night, September 7th.
Traffic will be controlled by flaggers who will only have space to move
traffic one direction at a time. Expect significant delays.
Drivers are advised to use alternate routes to avoid the area
during paving work.
For any urgent needs, call Zen Dutson at 503-572-5917.
Paving Project Notes
Crews are still working on some cleanup items, such as drainage adjustments and
adding gravel along the sides to provide a smooth transition between the
new pavement surface and the existing grade.
There are a few locations where speed humps were removed in order to do the
pavement overlay. These speed humps will be replaced within the next
two weeks. Striping will be replaced within the next two weeks.

Pavement Major Maintenance Program 2009-10
Tigard’s street network represents the largest investment made by city residents. Protecting
and maintaining this street network is a priority of the city. Recognizing this,
the City Council adopted a Street Maintenance Fee several years ago to provide
funding for pavement overlays, slurry seals, and other treatments to keep our
streets in good condition. This fee raises approximately $800,000 per year
for road maintenance.
Asphalt overlays involve a full paving crew placing a couple of inches of new pavement on
streets with higher traffic volume and/or poor pavement condition. Slurry seals
are a much less expensive thinner coating used on lower volume streets with good
pavement.
Not Enough $$
Unfortunately, the cost of asphalt has more than doubled in recent years. The cost
of oil has increased (asphalt is an oil product) and refineries have figured
out how to get more gasoline (and thus less asphalt) out of a barrel of oil.
This means that the $800,000 collected is no longer enough to keep up with
normal pavement deterioration. While we are doing our best to use the
existing funds to keep our streets in good condition, there are many
streets that are good overlay candidates that are not being paved.
The reason is simple. We do not have the funding to overlay all of them.
