Public sidewalks in good condition are important to us all. They serve as a
buffer to traffic, provide a safe path for pedestrians, help maintain strong neighborhoods and
prevent damage to lawn and greenspace.
Yet many Tigard property owners are not aware that sidewalk maintenance and repair is the responsibility
of the adjoining property owner. Common hazards include a sidewalk with a broken or missing concrete
chunk, a section lifted up by tree roots or a sidewalk slippery with wet leaves, snow or ice.
Now’s a good time to look at the condition of the sidewalk abutting your property—don’t forget
to check the sidewalk located behind your property fence. Sidewalk maintenance is important
for appearance and value, but more importantly, it may prevent pedestrian injuries and
expensive lawsuits.
