Traffic Calming Resources

Neighborhood Speed Watch Program
The Tigard Police Department sponsors a proactive approach to help reduce speeds in "your" Tigard neighborhoods with Speed Monitoring Trailers and the Neighborhood Speed Watch program.

Speed Cushion Program
In order to address concern raised by Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue (TVF&R), the City of Tigard no longer utilizes speed humps/bumps, but uses Speed Cushions as an effective alternative. Speed Cushions reduce vehicle speed while allowing emergency vehicles to straddle the device and continue past the cushion without reducing valuable response time. The Capital Construction & Transportation Division provides an opportunity for the installation of speed cushions on your street based on specific eligibility criteria.

School Zone Safety
Senate Bill 179 was enacted during the 2003 legislature and put into practice on July 1, 2004. This designated a school zone and the current speed statutes that govern school area speeds. Please visit the Tigard Police Department web page for details on School Zone Safety laws and speed limits associated with Senate Bill 179.

Note: School Zone Legislation Update: The Oregon Legislative Assembly recently enrolled House Bill 2840* which will revise school speed zone laws, effective July 1, 2006.

Click here to see House Bill 2840.

*House Bill 2840 will set a school speed limit of 20 mph when lights are flashing or, if there are no flashing lights:
  • From 7 AM to 5 PM on School Days for school zones adjacent to schools, and
  • When Children Are Present for school crosswalks not adjacent to schools.
Traffic Complaint Form
The Tigard Police Department is dedicated to reducing the number of accidents within the City caused by people running red lights, stop signs and speeding through your neighborhoods. This form provides you the opportunity to direct their attention to your concern.

Letters to the Editor
