Building Activity Trends Upward
September, 2011
The city’s building division continued to see an increase
in the number of permits issued, inspections performed and revenue collected at
the close of this fiscal year (June 30, 2011). Data showed a significant increase
in all areas over the previous fiscal year, and far exceeded the figures from
FY 08/09!
The biggest increase in building activity was tied to single-family homes and town houses.
The city issued permits for 113 dwelling units by June 30, compared to 41 dwelling
units in FY 08/09. Nearly 10,000 inspections were performed and permit fee revenue
significantly increased at the close of June.
This is great news for residents because services that were reduced or eliminated in response
to the economic recession are slowly being restored. The city’s building official,
Mark VanDomelen remains “cautiously optimistic” that the trend will continue.
The city will re-evaluate the building division position this fall to determine
if resources are available to continue current service levels throughout the winter.
