Hwy 99W Tigard Projects: Medians

Hwy 99W Improvements:
Raised Center Median

As part of continuing improvements to Hwy 99W in Tigard, a third southbound lane between 72nd Avenue and Highway 217 will be constructed.

According to ODOT, when there are three through lanes, the number of crashes resulting from left-turning vehicles is exceptionally high:

  • At a point where there are currently three through lanes and no median, there were nine crashes from left turning vehicles within a three-year time period (1994-1997).
  • At a point where there are only two through lanes and no median, there were no crashes during the same time frame.
To ensure the safety of motorists, ODOT will require the installation of a raised center median between 72nd Avenue and Highway 217 concurrent with the installation of a third southbound lane.

For more information on medians & access management, see the US Department of Transportation's "Safe Access is Good For Business" web primer: http://ops.fhwa.dot.gov/publications/amprimer/access_mgmt_primer.htm
